Family photos are such a beautiful way to preserve your story — the giggles, the cuddles, the chaos, and the connection. Whether you’re gathering your extended family for a legacy session or capturing this fleeting season with your little ones, a bit of prep can go a long way in making your experience fun, relaxed, and full of genuine moments. Here’s everything you need to know to feel prepared and confident before your session:
What to Wear
Extended Families:
The easiest way to coordinate a large group is to pick a color palette and have everyone choose outfits within it. Think earthy tones like rust, olive, cream, and tan — or soft neutrals like grey, dusty blue, and oatmeal. Avoid everyone matching exactly (no identical white shirts and jeans!) — instead, mix textures, patterns, and layers within the palette to create a visually cohesive but natural look.
Smaller Families:
Start with Mom’s outfit and build around it! Choose something she feels confident and comfortable in — a flowy dress, a great blouse with jeans, or a cozy sweater in a flattering color. From there, coordinate the rest of the family using complementary tones and styles.
What to Avoid:
Neon or super bright colors
Large logos or graphics
Super matchy-matchy outfits
Uncomfortable shoes or clothing (especially for little ones)
Too much black or pure white — they tend to photograph flat or harsh
Preparing the Kiddos
Happy kids make for happy photos! Here are a few simple ways to help them show up as their best selves:
Feed them before the session — full bellies = fewer meltdowns.
Make sure they’re well-rested — sessions are always smoother when kiddos aren’t running on empty.
Dress for comfort — especially for little ones who will want to run, jump, and play. Let’s lean into the movement rather than fight it!
Cold-weather sessions: Even if the forecast says it’s mild, bring hats, gloves, and jackets. I can’t tell you how often the temps drop unexpectedly! We can remove layers for photos, but it’s always nice to have options and take warm-up breaks if needed. Cold kids = cranky kids.
During the Session
The best family photos happen when everyone’s relaxed and having fun — so let’s make your session feel like a little adventure!
Play with your kids — tickles, piggyback rides, silly games, and snuggles are all encouraged. The more fun you’re having together, the better your images will turn out.
Follow their lead — if your toddler wants to explore or your kids are chasing butterflies, let’s roll with it. I aim to keep us moving and engaged the whole time.
Let’s be curious — we might go on a “nature walk,” look for cool rocks, or search for imaginary creatures. Anything to keep the vibe light and magical.
Bribes are welcome — with boundaries! A little candy or snack reward can work wonders, but I recommend saving those for the very end or when we really need them to avoid sticky fingers or distractions.
Bring a favorite toy or stuffy (for toddlers) — just like snacks, it’s often best to keep these tucked away until they’re truly needed.
Above all, trust the process and enjoy the time with your family. I’ll guide you every step of the way and make sure we capture beautiful, real moments that reflect who you are together.
Can’t wait to see you soon!
